The problem

Partner onboarding often stalls for weeks on missing details: the wrong certificate, an unexpected EDI version, or a field the partner always fills differently. Most of these delays can be avoided with the right checklist up front.

Before you build

  • Identifiers: the partner’s and your interchange IDs and qualifiers, plus any GLNs used.
  • Standard and version: for example EDIFACT D.96A or X12 4010, and the exact message types.
  • Transport: AS2 (with certificates and MDN settings), SFTP or a VAN, plus test and production endpoints.
  • Partner guidelines: their implementation guide, mandatory segments and code lists.
  • Acknowledgements: whether they expect functional acknowledgements (CONTRL or 997) and how fast.

Build it once, reuse it

  • Model message implementation guidelines (MIGs) and mapping guidelines (MAGs) in Integration Advisor, reusing your existing ones for the same message type.
  • Create the partner profile and agreement in Trading Partner Management from an agreement template, so new partners differ only in their specific settings.
  • Keep partner-specific rules in the guidelines, not in custom scripts.

Test like production

  • Exchange real sample files in both directions, including edge cases such as partial shipments and cancellations.
  • Confirm acknowledgements are sent and received correctly.
  • Test certificate expiry handling and agree who renews certificates and when.
  • Agree a go-live date, a monitoring contact on both sides, and a fallback if messages fail on day one.

Result

Partner onboarding becomes a repeatable process measured in days rather than weeks, and support teams know exactly where each partner’s rules live.
